Help / Canvas

Select, move, resize, duplicate and delete items on the canvas

Use the Select tool (V) to click an item, then drag it to move, drag its corners to resize, and use the right-click menu or shortcuts to copy, duplicate, group, lock, reorder or delete it.

Select and change items

Everything on the canvas (files, sticky notes, text, drawings, shapes, boards) is an item you can select and change with the Select tool.

Select and move

  1. Click Select in the toolbar or press V.
  2. Click an item to select it.
  3. Drag it to a new spot. For files with a name bar on top (images, videos, PDFs, links), you can also drag the name bar.

Double-clicking an image (or pressing Enter with one image selected) opens it in focus mode instead of selecting it for editing. See focus-mode.

Resize

  1. Select the item.
  2. Drag one of the corner handles. Hold Shift while dragging a sticky note to keep its proportions.

Copy, paste, duplicate and delete

  • Copy, cut and paste: Cmd/Ctrl + C, Cmd/Ctrl + X, Cmd/Ctrl + V, or right-click and use the clipboard options.
  • Duplicate: press Cmd/Ctrl + D. The copy appears just to the right of the original.
  • Delete: press Delete or Backspace.

The right-click menu

Right-click a selected item to open the menu. Depending on what is selected, it shows:

  • Arrange: layout options for the selection.
  • Reorder: Bring to front (]), Bring forward (Cmd/Ctrl + ]), Send backward (Cmd/Ctrl + [), Send to back ([).
  • Group (Cmd/Ctrl + G) or Ungroup (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + G).
  • Convert to Board and Tidy up when several items are selected (see select-multiple-items).
  • Lock or Unlock (Cmd/Ctrl + L). A locked item cannot be moved or edited until you unlock it.
  • The clipboard options and Select all (Cmd/Ctrl + A).
  • Export and download options for the canvas or the selection.

Who can do this

  • Owner and Can edit: everything above.
  • Can review: can select items, but cannot move, resize or delete files or boards, and does not get the Arrange, Reorder, Group, Lock, clipboard or export options.
  • Can view: can select items and look at them, but cannot change anything.
  • On phones (screens under 640 pixels wide) the canvas is view-only for everyone.

Good to know:

  • Made a mistake? Press Cmd/Ctrl + Z to undo (see undo-redo).
  • Freshly added images and videos are resized to fit the canvas, but you can always make them bigger by dragging a corner (see asset-placement-and-size).
