# Room roles and permissions (Owner, Can edit, Can review, Can view)

> Every room has one Owner and members with Can edit, Can review or Can view; the owner and editors change roles and remove people from the Share dialog.

## What each role can do

Each person in a room has one role. The person who created the room is the **Owner**.

| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| **Owner** | Everything **Can edit** can do. The owner cannot be removed and cannot leave their own room. |
| **Can edit** | Full editing of the canvas: add, move, resize and delete content, draw, create boards, edit Pactto Docs and tables, download assets. Invite people, change roles, remove members, admit people from the waiting room, mute other participants. |
| **Can review** | View the room and play videos, add comments and set the review status of assets. Cannot draw, edit or move content, download, invite people or mute others. |
| **Can view** | View the room, move around the canvas and play videos. Cannot comment, draw, edit, download, invite or mute others. |

All roles can follow a spotlight and use focus mode, and everyone can leave a room (except the owner).

New members invited by email get **Can review** unless the inviter picks another role. People who join from the room link or a session link start with **Can view**.

## Change someone's role

**Who can do this:** the owner and people with **Can edit**.

1. In the room, click **Share** (or, on **Your Rooms**, click **Add participant** in the room's row).
2. In **Room members**, find the person.
3. Click the role next to their name and choose **Can edit**, **Can review** or **Can view**.

The change applies right away, and the person's tools update in real time.

## Remove someone from a room

**Who can do this:** the owner and people with **Can edit**. Nobody can remove the owner.

1. Open the **Share room** dialog and find the person in **Room members**.
2. Click the role next to their name and choose **Remove**.
3. Confirm with **Remove** in the dialog **Remove "<name>" from <room>?**.

The person is taken out of the room and loses access.

## Leave a room for good

Any member except the owner can remove their own access.

1. Open the **Share room** dialog.
2. Find your own row in **Room members**, click your role and choose **Leave**.
3. Confirm in **Leave <room>?**. You will lose access to this room.

Using **Leave room** in the room's top bar only exits the meeting; you keep your access and can come back later.

## If something goes wrong

- **"Edit access requires a Pactto account"**: you tried to give **Can edit** to a guest who joined without an account. Click **Invite to Pactto** to email them an invitation to create an account, then give them edit access once they have one.
- **"Failed to change permission"** or **"Failed to remove participant"**: the change did not save and the previous role is restored. Try again.
- If your plan limits the number of editors per room, Pactto shows a plan limit message when you try to add one more.

## Good to know

- People with **Can review** and **Can view** see the member list and roles in the Share dialog, but cannot change them.
- A guest who joined through a session link keeps the **(Guest)** label even after you change their role.
