# Leave feedback with comments

> Click the Comment tool (or press K), then click an item or an empty spot on the canvas, type your feedback, and press Enter to post it.

## Comment on the canvas or on an item

Comments are pins you place on the canvas. A comment can sit on an empty spot, on an item (video, image, PDF, board, and so on), or on an area you draw. Everyone in the room sees new comments right away.

1. Click **Comment** in the toolbar (next to Select and Laser), or press **K**.
2. Choose where the comment goes:
   - Click an item to attach the comment to it. The pin moves with the item when the item is moved or resized.
   - Click an empty spot to leave a free comment on the canvas.
   - Click and drag to mark an area. A dashed rectangle shows the area while the comment is open, and the pin sits at its bottom-right corner.
3. Type your comment in the box (**Leave a comment. Use @ to mention.**).
4. Press **Enter** or click **Send**. Use **Shift+Enter** for a new line.

After you post, the box turns into the comment card and the pin shows your avatar. The tool switches back to Select.

## Add more to a comment

The buttons under the text box, from left to right:

- **AI voice**: record a voice note. Recording starts right away; click the pulsing button to stop. Your words are transcribed into the comment text and the recording is attached so others can play it. If transcription is not available, the recording is attached as audio only.
- **Mention**: tag someone in the room (you can also type **@**). See [Reply, mention, and resolve comments](https://www.pactto.com/help/comment-threads.md).
- **Attach**: add images, videos, or PDFs as references. You can pick several files at once.
- **Emoji**: insert emoji. The picker stays open so you can add several.
- **Annotation**: draw on the canvas or the item with a pen. Pick a color and line thickness, or **Clear** to start over. The drawing shows only while the comment is open.
- **Flag**: tag the comment with a priority such as **Urgent**, **High**, **Normal**, or **Low**, or create your own with **+ Create new flag**.

Comment text supports Markdown, for example **bold**, *italic*, lists, and links.

## Close or cancel

- Press **Esc** to close the comment box.
- Clicking outside posts the comment if you typed something, or discards it if it is empty.

## Who can comment

- The room owner and people with the **Can edit** or **Can review** role can add comments.
- People with the **Can view** role and guests can see comments but do not have the Comment tool.
- If the server refuses a comment you see **Only reviewers and editors can add comments.** Ask the room owner to change your role.

## Good to know

- If you delete an item, the comments attached to it are deleted too (undo restores both).
- Comments do not appear when you export the canvas as an image.
- AI tools can add comments on your behalf: the in-app AI assistant, the Pactto MCP server, and the Pactto CLI with a write key.
